Dozens killed across Iraq - Telegraph:

A string of car bombings and other attacks has killed at least 32 people across Iraq, as the country gears up for local elections.

This small commentary piece was initially shared earlier this evening on Facebook. Anyway, I thought I might share my thoughts on these matters here as well.

I don’t usually enter into such matters on Facebook - for multiple reasons - but this also happened today. In case you were wondering, this is no competition but how many of you noticed this before what has tragically occurred in Boston today? It’s a rhetorical question in case you were not already aware. I just find it saddening that such matters are swept away and similar instances in more ‘familiar’ areas become today’s ‘hot topic’. I fully realise many of us will near automatically centre in on matters close to home, it’s just saddening sometimes. I won’t pretend to be someone that is on the pulse of current affairs - I am not. However, when witnessing such an overwhelming precedence of ‘loss’ directed in such a manner…well, perhaps I am mistaken but it just seems wrong. Anyway, back to mocking a dead woman and her state funeral.

A friend of mine responded to this with ‘closer to home? barely (i just checked google maps). I believe the phrase you wanted was ‘closer to tone”, to which I concurred. My writing skills are OK but they are far from what they could be.

Cousins are a band I discovered tonight. I like them a lot. They’re a real odd mix of stomping rock, grunge, garage rock ‘n’ roll, lo-fi and, well, something a bit different overall. It’s a tad tiresome to list genres and possible comparisons but it helps some people to access things. Elements of Roky Eirksson, The Gun Club and Jonathan Richman collide with wired elements of bands such as Thee Oh Sees and The Pixies to some extent. Genuinely impressed and already fond. Sorry for the overly comparatative overtures but do give them a listen.

So, this is a gig night I co-organise in Southsea. Champagne Justice! is all about promoting a combination of alternative local acts and touring bands from across the UK and beyond. We’ve been going for nigh-on nine months now. I’m pretty proud of that. It’s not always easy - and it’s a constant learning curve - but it’s a labour of love and we’ve had the fortuity to meet some truly wonderful and talented folk thus far.

Strong Island is a local community bringing together the greatness that resides and is spawned from our fair city of Portsmouth. Please get involved with both if you’re at all interested in the arts…and partying. A big shout out to Charlie Thompson for the article, indeed to the whole Strong Island crew for being bloody brilliant.

‘Georges Méliès (English pronunciation: /mɛ.li.’əz/); (8 December 1861 – 21 January 1938), full name Marie-Georges-Jean Méliès, was a French illusionist and film-maker famous for leading many technical and narrative developments in the earliest days of cinema.

Méliès, a prolific innovator in the use of special effects, accidentally discovered the substitution stop trick in 1896, and was one of the first film-makers to use multiple exposures, time-lapse photography, dissolves, and hand-painted colour in his work. Because of his ability to seemingly manipulate and transform reality through cinematography, Méliès is sometimes referred to as the first “Cinemagician”.

Two of his most well-known films are A Trip to the Moon (1902) and The Impossible Voyage (1904). Both stories involve strange, surreal voyages, somewhat in the style of Jules Verne, and are considered among the most important early science fiction films, though their approach is closer to fantasy.

Méliès was also an early pioneer of horror cinema, which can be traced back to his Le Manoir du diable (1896). He was also featured in the book The Invention of Hugo Cabret as well as its film adaptation Hugo. —Georges Méliès (12 photos)’
